La Serena is a popular seaside town. The mornings were cloudy but the sky cleared by noon.
In case you don't like the real beach, you can try an artificial one
We arrived in time for a day at the races
which attracted whole families to join in!
We stayed near the main square which was very busy
Next door, a wedding:
And this guy warming up
We found his cousin at the zoo
Along with chickens, goats, emus and llamas.
And the circus is in town from Mexico
Actually there is another circus here as well. Can't have too many clowns
Speaking of which...
entertainment for the motorists
Coquimbo, the nearby fishing village
where pelicans and other birds compete with the seals for leftovers
and the local swim team joins the mix
This area in Chile is one of the most ideal spots in the world to view the night sky and is home to many world class observatories such as the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory.
Astronomers conduct tours at a local observatory, "Mamalluca".
On our way
We're headed up a mountain valley.
to Vicuna
where yet another wedding is taking place
As night falls we head up into the hills.
to the observatory
Our guide told us some history of astronomy and telscopes. We saw Jupiter with 4 of its 58 moons, and Venus. He also pointed out the Southern Cross and told us how to find where south is. We also looked at a star in Orion's belt, nebulas and clusters.
But the 'star' of the show was the big cheese
Incredible detail
"Good night moon".
