Namibian Desert - day 2 /Nov07

The next morning we slept in until 4 AM!  This is the first time we can see the stars without the moon washing them away.  We can see the other half of the Milky Way and the Magellenic cloud.  Haven't spotted the Southern Cross yet.

Up bright (or not) and early to catch the sunrise from the top of Dune '45'.  After a trudge up the dune and sunrise, we run down the dune which is a lot more fun than going up!

Finally we get breakfast, prepared by our helpers Ja and Twarfinny.

More desert at sunrise.

More desert life

This is another dune, 'Big Momma'.  But we skipped this one.

More than just birds:

We're at Deadvlei

These trees are over 800 years old, but because it's so dry they are still standing.

Here I'm being a little Arsty

A short hike away is a watering hole.

Some of the local customers

And the road home

We stopped at the Sesriem Canyon.

With a pterodactyl nest.
Or an ostrich nest.
Or a bunch of sticks washed up in the last flood.

And the giant chicken.

We get to our next camp and head to the bar and pool.  We're really roughing it! The local oryx shows up and starts pushing people into the pool!
(Thanks Phil for the photo)

We have another guest at the campsite.

And now it's dinner time!

  1. The dunes against the blue sky are amazing. The photo with the 800+ year-old tree is surreal and absolutely beautiful. Must be framed. Would look great in your living room.
